Cézanne, Paul |
This landscape was probably painted in the south of France. However, the title given to it by Venturi, *Pine Tree at l'Estaque,* has been challenged by Rewald, who believes that it is more likely a view of the outskirts of Aix and should be dated to 1875-1876. It is true that nothing in this scene resembles the countryside around the little fishing village of l'Estaque as painted by Cézanne during that period. The composition here breaks away from the classic disposition for landscape painting: there is no middle ground, and the foreground, composed of an embankment or boulders and the tall pine that frames the scene, is quite asymmetrical.
